With global warming becoming an issue of concern in the world and costs of living skyrocketing, many countries have come out and set up programs to guard the environment. Schools have been encouraged to conserve energy. In fact many governments recommend that schools should be designed in a way that help conserve the environment and save energy, which can be termed as “Go Green”. Such measures as recycling used materials, using alternative sources of energy and composting are being adapted by schools in order to ensure the environment is conserved and create conducive learning environment.

Green competitions has also been adopted by schools and businesses. Some of the measures that schools put in place in a bid to go green hence ...
... saving energy and conserving the environment include: installing solar panels, switching off all appliances that use electricity when they are not needed, organizing and participation in energy competition between schools and organizing environmental seminars.

Another measure is that of day lighting which involves using natural light during the day to provide light as an alternative of using electricity. Many schools are built in a design that allows placement of windows and other transparent objects in order to permit a lot of light into the rooms.

It is not only in schools where there is green competitions for business owners are adopting this method. Here are some of the measures adopted by businesses:

Recycling of electronic wastes

Most businesses have adopted this practice where old electronic equipment are recycled instead of being thrown away as waste. These electronic equipment contain dangerous substances that can harm the environment if disposed off. Businesses are trying to outdo each other in the green competitions and it is not uncommon to see businesses encouraging its workers to do this by even rewarding the most outstanding one- the one who collects the most of electronic wastes.

Encouraging staff to ride bikes to work instead of driving their cars

Most businesses are encouraging their workers to consider riding bicycles and public means of transport like the buses to work; the more cars on the road the more emissions into the air which is a detriment to the environment. Some businesses have adopted reward programs to their employees who adhere to this advocacy.

Clean up party

Some businesses hold a clean up party for its employees. This involves sending the employees out to go and collect any trash around the compound. The more the trash an employee collects the more the rewards he/she gets.

Encouraging employees to reuse their lunch bags

Most of them use the lunch bags once and throw them away. Most business are encouraging their employees to reuse their lunch bags to save the costs and also conserve the environment. Most businesses do this by rewarding the employees who sustain their lunch bags for longer times.

Recycling batteries

Batteries disposed off is a an environmental hazard. They fill a lot of toxic substances and acids in the land. Businesses raise awareness through holding a competition of recycling batteries. The businesses reward those who have collected the most of the batteries.
